In the darkest moments, miracles can happen.
After seven years of art school, learning to be a Bard, Pran is kicked out when a prank goes sideways and ends up breaking a friend's leg. Left to fend for herself, all hope gone, she happens upon a helpless woman being attacked and tries her best to stop it.
Breaking a few laws in the process.
Now she has a choice, either learn to be an apprentice Guardian until things settle down, or learn to survive on the streets.
The decision is easy, since eating is far more pleasant than starvation, or so she assumes. Being a Guardian is a lot more than she bargained for however and with each passing day it become far more obvious that something is very wrong with the world.
Because people have started to worship the technologies of the past, and as a Guardian, no matter how new, it's up to her to stop them.
Before they destroy the world.
This is book one in the brand new series from P.S. Power The Lament.
*It's about right for anyone that enjoyed "The Hunger Games" or finished the "Harry Potter" series. Some adult themes and situations.

I have enjoyed the Gwen Farris series so far and wanted to try this new story series. The story had the same "feel" as Gwen Farris. A woman is trying to fit into a new "role" and feels like a fake or feels she is making it up as she goes.
Personally, I was not happy with the Guardian mission of anti-tech. But you the reader should not be swayed by my bias.
I liked the story over all but I'm not inspired to continue the series like I am for Ms. Power's other work.

Without Rhythm The Lament Book 1 eBook PS Power Reviews
I cannot stop reading the works of this author. Each series is a stand alone that makes me stand up and beg for more books.
Pran is a wonderful character. She handles trials and tribulation with panache.
As an adult and senior citizen I must say the each book in each series is entertaining and hard to put down. I have almost stopped going to the public library because my overdue fines are outrageous. I would rather read a P.S. Power book on my that most any book I can get at the library.
While many of the author's "universes" include what might be called superpowers or special talents, this "universe" seems more mundane. The most apparent special talent of the main character appears to be a realism -- a hard, realistic approach to life, which leads her forward at a fairly rapid pace to gain acceptance by other characters within the story.
I'm looking forward to the next installment, realizing that while this story is more mundane, it also leaves considerable room for character development.
This first novel is the beginning, and the new heroine is up to the task. A world where consumption of more than a person needs has been (for lack of a better word) outlawed. Certain people who are in charge of ensuring the maintenance of the balance of power. Others who want to take power for themselves. All the ingredients for a good read. Enjoy
I love P.S. Power, who writes in a variety of ways on all sorts of topics. I don't even know if P.S. is a man, woman, or child, but he/she is certainly creative and prolific. "Without Rhythm" is a very good book regarding a young woman who suddenly finds herself transported into a life's work she wasn't expecting and hadn't been trained for. What I enjoyed about this character is her capacity to quickly grasp a situation and move with it intelligently. I imagine we all wish we had that talent of moving through life with consciousness and equinamity, which is why the heroine is so appealing in a universal manner.
I recommend this one by P.S.
This is another great new world from P.S. Power. Basically, if he writes a book now, I read it. It's the start of a new series with a fun (and quirky) new protagonist named Pran. She definitely has spunk and a sense of humor and doesn't shirk from responsibility. That also means that she does have a tendency to just follow along with whatever the situation is, which I would imagine will get her into even more trouble. It's an interesting mind-set, but I'm not sure I can believe anyone would be like that (my suspension of disbelief was tested with that aspect of her character, but I can overlook it).
Overall, I'm looking forward to more from the series. It should be a fun ride. Plus, there are blimps. You can't beat a story with blimps, right?
I would certainly recommend this book to others. If you like any other P.S. Power book, you'll like this one as well.
After reading that this was to be a Young Adult series, I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did, but this author has a way of creating characters that grow on you. Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the plot so I will skip that rundown, but I must point out that this book shares a similar theme with some of L.E. Modisett's works, with regard to checks on individual resource and power usages, which is great since I love those books. Also, this is a theme seen in the Young Ancients to some extent, but I suspect as this series progresses we will see more on this topic.
As for the our protagonist, Pran seems like a very can-do young woman used to hard work and sacrifice but she is also green and untried as the story starts, and Without Rhythm is the beginning of her rite of passage. I enjoy Pran's efforts to maintain a cool exterior while stepping on her own self-doubt, and look forward to learning more about her development as she comes to grasp with her own identity. I would classify this effort as a great first book in what I hope will be a long running series.
I have to admit even now I am not sure how I feel about this new series. I have really enjoyed the rest of PS Powers writing (except the zombie books which I couldn't make myself read) This is a much less magic oriented world, but has some interesting concepts. I have a feeling this book was nothing more than a large setup for the rest of the series. I kept expecting something magical to happen, but it never did. Some of the characters exhibit magic type attributes, but nothing that couldn't be explained away.
If you are expecting an adventure with magic, this is not your book. However, if you have liked the rest of PS Powers books you will most likely enjoy this book as well. I for one could not really put it down, but I think that was because I kept thinking something magical might happen.
I hope the next book in this series takes it up a notch.
